A well-known Zumba instructor and former Fayette County Public Schools employee pleaded guilty Thursday to sexually abusing four boys.
Jason Thompson, 33, pleaded guilty to six counts of second-degree sexual abuse, according to court documents. In 2012, Thompson was charged with second-degree sodomy and five counts of first-degree sexual abuse; the charges were reduced as part of a plea deal Thursday.
Three of the charges stem from incidents between May and August of 2009 involving a 13-year-old boy who lived with Thompson and slept in the same bed with him, according to court documents. The documents said Thompson performed oral sex and fondled the boy, and masturbated while the boy was in the room.
The rest of the charges relate to the abuse of three other boys whom Thompson hugged, kissed on the forehead and fondled while a teacher at Leestown Middle School, the documents show.
Never miss a local story.
Thompson, a 1999 graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, worked for the school system from 2006 until he resigned at the end of the 2010-11 school year. He resigned after district officials questioned him about allegations of inappropriate contact between him and a minor.
He last worked at Leestown Middle School, where he was a special education instructional assistant and coached the school's dance team.
Thompson was released on a full cash $10,000 bond in October 2012 and remains out on bail on conditions that he stays away from the boys, receives a sexual abuse and offender assessment, and registers as a sex offender for 20 years.
Sentencing for Thompson is scheduled for April 4. Each count is punishable by a year in prison; the sentences would be served concurrently.
Fayette Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Larson said he offered Thompson the plea deal to save the boys from public embarrassment.
"I will always consider what's best for the crime victims, and this is one of those cases," he said. "I didn't want to amend it, but the bottom line was I'd rather amend it, get this guy convicted, require him to be a sex offender, get him a 12-month sentence and have him exposed."
