Kingdom Come State Park in southeastern Kentucky will reopen Tuesday after a forest fire burned about 200 acres of park land in Harlan and Letcher counties, according to a state news release.
The state Parks Department initially hoped to reopen the park on Pine Mountain Monday if enough rain fell early to help control the fire, spokesman Gil Lawson said.
The blaze started on neighboring private land and spread to the park, which was closed Sunday morning in part because of smoke covering roads and trails in its roughly 1,280 acres.
Some park trails will be closed until they are inspected and cleared, according to the announcement released Monday afternoon.
Kingdom Come does not have a park lodge. It offers hiking trails, primitive campsites and a playground.
Fortunately, Lawson said, the park is not particularly busy during weekdays this time of year.
