Two people escaped an apartment house fire Thursday at an apartment complex on North Broadway Road that temporarily displaced tenants in five apartments.
A man and a woman were inside the building, but they did not appear to have any injuries, Battalion Chief Joe Best, a Lexington Fire Department spokesman, said.
Firefighters received a call at 2:06 p.m. about a fire at 516 North Broadway Road, Best said. Traffic was shut down on North Broadway Road between Fifth and Seventh streets for 90 minutes as firefighters battled the blaze.
The cause of the fire had not been determined, but Best estimated that $5,000 of damage was done to the building.

Kentucky Utilities shut off electricity and gas to the building, and both will be cut off to the apartment house as the LFD investigates, Best said. Five of the seven apartments inside the building were occupied by residents. All of those residents will be displaced while utilities are shut off.
"Typically in these situations, it will be a day or two before (utilities) are turned back on," Best said.
The American Red Cross will be available to assist those who will be momentarily displaced.
