The driver of a tractor-trailer was distracted when he turned into the wrong entrance of a Pulaski County fertilizer plant Friday, causing a collision with a train and an explosion, according to a news release Monday form the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said the Warner Fertilizer plant has two entrances, one for northbound traffic and one for southbound traffic.
Viktor Kalchenia, 27, of Auburn, Wash., was traveling north in his 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer when he missed the plant entrance, they said. He tried to turn left into the southbound entrance while watching his tires and taking his eyes off the tracks and pulling forward, the release said.
The tractor-trailer burst into flames when it collided with a passing train, and heavy black smoke could be seen for miles. He was treated for burns at the scene, then flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
