A Floyd County man was charged with murder Sunday after a deadly altercation at the Knott County Trail Ride.
Kentucky State Police said Miles Hamilton, 21, of Wayland shot and killed Zachary Murphy, 19, of Langley. The two men fought and were separated, then Hamilton got a handgun and shot Murphy, who died at the scene, state police said in a news release.
Police said Hamilton ran off, then returned several hours later and turned himself in. He was taken to the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard.
State police said the call came in shortly after midnight. Troopers and Knott County sheriff's deputies who were working at the event responded to the altercation.
The Knott County Trail ride is a four-day event held the first weekends of October and May. It includes horseback rides, camping and live entertainment. According to WLEX-TV, Knott County Coroner Jeff Blair said more than 3,000 campers were at the trail ride for a concert when the shooting occurred.
A Knott County tourism website says the trail ride was named one of the state's top 10 fall festivals and events by the Kentucky Tourism Council.
