A street in downtown Lexington was blocked Wednesday night as police investigated what they said was a suspicious package.
Lt. Kevin Metcalf said East Main Street was blocked from Quality to Limestone after a package was reported to be sitting in front of police headquarters at about 8 p.m. Police evacuated the first floor of headquarters as the Hazardous Devices Unit, including a robot, responded with 15 to 20 other officers and firefighters, who determined the box was empty.
The package was described as a cardboard box with tape around it. The location of the box is what made it suspicious, Metcalf said.
The streets were reopened about 9:45.
Never miss a local story.
Metcalf said police have people of interest, but no suspects. The incident is under investigation.
