A bedfast Clay County man has died, and police said his wife is responsible.
Charles Burkhart Jr., 32, died Thursday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, said Clay County Sheriff Kevin Johnson.
Burkhart became unable to care for himself after a car wreck several years ago, he said.
On Tuesday or Wednesday, Burkhart's wife, Amy Burkhart, called for an ambulance, and he was taken to a local hospital, then transferred to UK, Johnson said.
Johnson, who said Burkhart suffered from bedsores, called it "the worst case of neglect."
As Burkhart breathed, "you could actually see his lung come out" through wounds in his skin, Johnson said. WKYT-TV reported that he was malnourished and dehydrated.
Amy Burkhart was initially charged with criminal abuse, but Johnson said he expects the charges to be upgraded in light of Charles Burkhart's death. He said Kentucky State Police are in charge of the investigation.
