A 20-year-old man found shot on a Lexington residential street Tuesday morning has been identified by the Fayette County coroner's office as Vondre R. Smithers.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at the state medical examiner's office in Frankfort, according to a coroner's news release.
Lexington police launched a homicide investigation after finding Smithers on Bellefonte Drive, which is between Tates Creek and Nicholasville roads, shortly after 7 a.m., said police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts.
Police and fire units were dispatched to the 3300 block of Bellefonte after callers reported that someone had been hit by a car and was lying in the road.

Smithers was lying in the street near the curb, at a spot where the street curves.
He was taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where it was determined that he had been shot, Roberts said.
Officers gathered forensic evidence at the scene, Roberts said.
She declined to answer questions about whether the victim had been shot at the scene, or shot elsewhere and then left there. She said only that the investigation was just getting underway.
