Authorities are trying to determine whether a small forest fire Sunday night in Estill County was deliberately set.
Derrick Muncey, chief of the Estill County Fire Department, said a ranger from the Kentucky Division of Forestry was searching for signs of arson Monday afternoon.
The blaze struck in an isolated area where few people live, increasing suspicions that the fire might have been started deliberately, Muncey said.
A resident reported the blaze about 9 p.m. Sunday on Redbud Road near Barnes Mountain southeast of Irvine, according to authorities. There are only a handful of homes in the area, they said.
Estill County firefighters went to the scene, as well as units from the Kentucky Division of Forestry, according to Muncey.
The blaze burned about five acres before it was contained, Muncey said. No homes or other buildings were damaged, he said.
