A Laurel County couple and their adult son were arrested and charged with wanton endangerment after police say they hid inside their home and left a 3-year-old and 5-year-old whom they were supposed to be babysitting alone outside.
A constable, Chris Webb, went to a home on Taylor Bridge Road about 4 miles south of London to serve court papers Friday afternoon; he found the two children outside unattended, and he was "unable to get any adults to come to the door," according to the Laurel County sheriff's office.
Representatives of the sheriff's office and social services were called, and after more than 30 minutes they found the three adults, all of whom had outstanding arrest warrants, hiding inside. All three were charged with wanton endangerment in addition to the charges for which they were already wanted, the sheriff's office said.
Charles Smith, 43, was charged on a Laurel County bench warrant with fourth-degree assault — domestic violence. The sheriff's office also identified him as a registered sex offender.
Nancy Smith, 49, was charged on a Whitley County bench warrant with failure to appear in court on traffic violations.
Guy Smith, 22, was charged on a Laurel County bench warrant with failure to appear regarding traffic violations.
All three were taken to the Laurel County Detention Center. The children were released into the care of the parent who had left them with the Smiths.
