A woman was injured early Monday afternoon in a fire in a two-story house near Transylvania University, a Lexington fire official said.
Firefighters removed the woman and three dogs from inside the house in the 500 block of Toner Street between Fifth and Sixth streets, Battalion Chief Todd Samuelson said.
The woman was treated briefly in an ambulance and then was taken to a hospital. Samuelson said firefighters administered oxygen to at least some of the dogs.
Firefighters arrived about 2 p.m. to find a fire in a first-floor bedroom, Samuelson said. Light smoke was visible when trucks arrived, he said.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, but there was smoke damage to both floors, Samuelson said.
Westbound traffic on Fifth Street was stopped between North Upper Street and North Broadway while firefighters worked the blaze.
The cause of the fire remained unknown Monday afternoon, firefighters said.
Samuelson said the house didn't have working smoke alarms.
