A 46-year-old Fayette County jail inmate died early Tuesday. He was found unresponsive in his jail cell, Lexington officials said.
Steven W. Lieras was pronounced dead at 4:36 a.m. at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
The death did not appear to be suspicious, according to a news release from city officials. Police have opened an investigation, officials said.
The Fayette County coroner's office said in a news release that an autopsy was conducted Tuesday and that preliminary results indicated Lieras died of natural causes.
According to the news release, Lexington police arrested Lieras shortly after 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, and he was jailed on an intoxication charge. He also was wanted on a warrant for failing to make a court appearance.
Corrections officers found him unresponsive in his cell about 4 a.m. and called an ambulance while trying to resuscitate him, officials said.
Lieras was originally from Louisville and did not have a fixed Lexington address, the coroner's office said.
