Lexington police said they charged a woman Monday afternoon after she allegedly left her two children, ages 5 and 1, alone and unattended at their apartment.
Sophia Jackson, 34, was charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a minor, police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.
Jackson was back with her children by about 3 p.m. Monday, while police waited for representatives from the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services to arrive and take charge of the youngsters, Roberts said.
Roberts said the older child is a boy, but she didn't know the 1-year-old's gender.
Just before noon, police received a call from a property manager at the Matador North apartment complex on Winburn Drive, Roberts said.
The manager told officers that a maintenance worker had gone to an apartment to do some work and had found the two children unattended.
Police went to the apartment, made contact with the mother and determined that she had left the children unattended while she went to work, Roberts said.
The children probably were left alone for less than an hour, Roberts said.
An investigation is continuing.
