A bank robbery suspect being pursued by Lexington police died Saturday morning in a one-vehicle accident on the Interstate 75 ramp off Athens-Boonesboro Road.
Lexington fire officials told the Herald-Leader that the Fayette County coroner was called to the scene, and the coroner's office confirmed that the man was killed in the crash. The man was identified as Lonnie Ray Hatfield Jr., 30, of Richmond.
Police Lt. Kevin Metcalf provided details about the accident:
At 9:59 a.m., employees at Fifth Third bank at 3100 Richmond Road, in Mist Lake Plaza, reported that a scruffy-looking white man in his 30s, about 6 feet tall, had presented a note demanding money. He then fled.
A witness saw the man get into a silver car in the Wal-Mart parking lot, also in Mist Lake Plaza, and took note of the license plate number.
A police officer saw the vehicle in the southbound lane of Interstate 75 at the 108 mile marker and stopped the vehicle.
The driver initially pulled over, but then took off again, Metcalf said.
Driving erratically, the driver exited the interstate at the 104 mile marker.
The vehicle crossed over Athens-Boonesboro Road, got onto the on ramp to 1-75, and hit an embankment.
