The suspect who was injured in the officer-involved crash just after 6 p.m. Monday at Family Dollar has been identified as David Schlechty.
Cmdr. Thomas Curtsinger said officers were called to Southland Shopping Center about Schlechty who later was charged with second-degree disorderly conduct. Once police arrived, Schlechty was handcuffed and placed on the curb in front of Family Dollar, 420 Southland Drive, he said.
As officer Justin Burnett got into his patrol car, he either lost control of the car or something caused it to go forward, Curtsinger said. The car hit Schlechty and crashed into the store, breaking glass, shattering bricks and knocking over trash cans.
Schlechty was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Burnett was shaken up but was OK, Curtsinger said.
It was not clear whether the man was pinned between the car and the building. The Collision Reconstruction Unit was investigating, Curtsinger said.
He also said it was too early to determine whether the police officer would be put on leave.
