A district judge has been suspended for seven days because she jailed a woman who cursed her, the state Judicial Conduct Commission announced Monday.
Cathy E. Prewitt, chief district judge for McCreary and Whitley counties, will serve the unpaid suspension beginning in late August, the commission's order said.
The order said Prewitt raised a bond for a man last year without notice or hearing. When the man's mother learned of the decision while trying to pay the bond, she called Prewitt an obscenity in the clerk's office.
Prewitt asked the mother about the obscenity at a hearing later that day. When the woman admitted it, Prewitt held her in contempt and ordered her jailed for 24 hours, without benefit of a hearing or legal representation, the conduct commission said.

The commission said Prewitt had violated ethics standards. Prewitt agreed to the suspension.
