A father was arrested in Laurel County after his 23-month-old son was left alone outside for "an extended period," authorities said.
Neighbors found the toddler on Sunday wearing only a soiled diaper and crying on the porch of a home on Delbert Hodge Road, about a mile north of London, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.
A woman said she had tried to get someone to come to the door, but when she was unable to rouse anyone she took the boy to her home and called the sheriff's office.
"The child appeared to be very hungry and thirsty and was very dirty," according to the news release.
After several minutes of knocking on the door to the child's home, deputies said, his father, Danny Jones Jr., 25, came to the door saying he had just woken up.
"He told deputies that he had a party at his residence the night prior and had several people at his residence drinking alcoholic beverages. Deputies detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverages on his breath," the release stated.
Jones said "he thought his child was supposed to be with the child's mother but wasn't really sure where the child was located."
Jones is charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, public intoxication — controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Social services released the toddler to other family members.
