State police charged a Knox County couple with first-degree criminal abuse after finding that their 5-month-old baby weighed only 7 pounds, according to a news release.
Police investigated after social workers called about the baby on Tuesday.
The mother had taken the infant to the hospital in Corbin. The infant was transferred to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital for treatment of malnourishment and several rashes, according to the release.
Workers at the Knox County Health Department told the mother to take the baby to the hospital after she went to the department to receive benefits under a nutrition program, according to the release.

Trooper Russell Maynard arrested the parents, 24-year-old Kenneth Hooker and 21-year-old Jessica Hooker.
