A 16-year-old boy accused of shooting a 14-year-old boy has been charged with assault.
The 16-year-old and 14-year-old were with another boy, a 17-year-old, at the Raintree Apartments about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday playing with a handgun when the gun went off, according to Lexington police. The 14-year-old was struck in the neck and taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.
The 16-year-old boy was charged with second-degree assault for “wantonly causing serious physical injury with the use of a deadly weapon,” according to police. His name has not been released.
The 16-year-old and 17-year-old panicked and ran, according to police.
The shooting was initially reported to police as a drive-by that may have been drug-related, according to police. Soon after the original report, one of the juveniles told his parents what happened and spoke to police.
The apartment complex where the shooting occurred is near Richmond Road and Man o’ War Boulevard.
The 14-year-old boy was still in the hospital Thursday morning. He was listed in stable condition.
Police were still investigating where the boys got the handgun, police spokeswoman Brenna Angel said Thursday morning.
