A Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government bus with about 20 middle school-age children on board hit a utility pole on Thursday, snapping the pole.
The bus was headed south on Liberty Road when it veered off the right side of the road near Graftons Mill Lane about 3:30 p.m. Maj. Daniel Bello of the Lexington fire department said the bus driver had a medical condition that might have contributed to the crash.
The bus was transporting special-needs children who are in a day-treatment program operated by the urban county government, according to Mayor Jim Gray's office.
Several children were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Bello said.
Never miss a local story.
Parents picked up the other children, he said.
Bello said he did not know what type of medical condition caused the bus driver to crash. But a 14-year-old girl who was on the bus said the driver started shaking before the bus went off the road.
Power outages in the area were expected to be restored by 8 p.m., according to Kentucky Utilities' Web site.
