A student at Lexington's Eastside Technical Center brought a gun to the school Wednesday and displayed it to other students on the bus going to class, school district officials said.
After receiving a tip, school officials summoned Fayette public schools law enforcement officers, who found the weapon in the student's backpack.
The weapon was not loaded, but the student did have a loaded ammunition clip with him, school district spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said.
The student was taken into custody, charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property. According to Deffendall, he could face punishment through the juvenile court system, as well as possible "serious administrative consequences" from the school district.
The student told officials he had no intention of using the gun, Deffendall said.
The incident occurred around noon, soon after school buses arrived at Eastside for afternoon classes. The school district sent letters to parents Wednesday afternoon explaining the situation.
