A former solicitor general in Virginia and expert in education law has been named general counsel at the University of Kentucky.
William Thro, a Kentucky native who has spent most of professional life in Virginia, will start Oct. 15 with an annual salary of $200,000, UK officials said.
Thro is currently general counsel at Christopher Newport University, a liberal arts institution of about 4,700 students in Newport News.
Between 1997 and 2008, Thro, 48, served as assistant attorney general and solicitor general for three attorneys general in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Thro is a graduate of Hanover College and received a Master of Arts with Honors from the University of Melbourne in Australia. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was a member of the Virginia Law Review.
