Lexington's Arlington Elementary School briefly went on lockdown late Wednesday afternoon after shots were heard in the nearby area, schools officials said.
No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred about 4:05 p.m. after classes had been dismissed and most students had left for the day, Fayette Schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said.
Deffendall said about 30 students were still attending after-school club meetings inside the building, along with about 20 staffers. Some parents also were in the school parking lot waiting to pick up their children, she said.
Deffendall said that when the shots were heard, everyone went inside the school and the building was placed on lockdown. The lockdown continued for about 10 minutes, she said.
She said police officers came to the school and briefly met with the students to give them some reassurance before they were allowed to go home.
Police checked some surrounding neighborhoods and talked with residents, but had turned up nothing as of about 5 p.m.
Arlington is on Arceme Avenue on Lexington's north side, a few blocks from Castlewood Park.
