Kentucky State Police say they have identified an 11-year-old girl as the source of social media threats made against schools in Greenup County.
Troopers from the Ashland state police post said they launched an investigation Tuesday after threats of violence at schools in the county turned up on social media. Police said that within about six hours, they identified the girl as the source.
The posted threats mentioned "Greenup" but didn't list specific schools, officials said.
No one else was involved, and no more threats against the schools have been made, state police said.
Nevertheless, all three school systems in the county — Greenup County Schools, Russell Independent Schools and Raceland-Worthington Independent Schools — were closed Wednesday as a precaution.
Charges against the girl are pending, state police said in a news release.
Security was increased at schools during the investigation, police said.
