Winburn Middle School's academic team coach says her team has a lot in common with the Wildcats.
"They have gone undefeated the entire year," said Robyn Wilson, who also teaches at Winburn. "It's just a remarkable group of kids."
On Monday, Winburn's 12-member quick recall team won first place in the state Governor's Cup competition in Louisville.
In the overall competition, which combines scores from quick recall and seven other academic categories, Winburn's team of 30 students placed third in the state. Johnson County Middle School was first.
Never miss a local story.
Among high school competitors, Paul Laurence Dunbar's team placed fourth in the state. Louisville's DuPont Manual was first.
Wilson said the secrets to the Winburn team's success were twofold: supportive parents and students who love to learn. "As a coach, all you have to do is lay the information out and they soak it up like sponges," she said.
And like the University of Kentucky men's basketball team, Winburn still has a few more rounds of competition before its season will end.
The quick recall team's next major stop is the National Academic Quiz Tournaments' middle school championships in Dallas in May.
And Winburn's future problem solving team placed fifth at the Governor's Cup, qualifying them for national competition in Iowa in June.
