A 10-year-old child died Monday afternoon after being hit by a school bus in Whitley County.
Kentucky State Police have identified the child as Jonathan A. Chatham of the Rock Hold Community. An investigation is continuing.
The boy had just gotten off the bus at his grandparents' home on Ky. 511 in the Browns Creek community, about nine miles east of Williamsburg, said Sheriff Colan Harrell.
At least one of the boy's parents was waiting for him to get off the bus when the accident occurred about 4 p.m., Harrell said.
Never miss a local story.
He said the Kentucky State Police Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement was investigating the cause of the accident.
Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley said the school bus was coming from Whitley North Elementary, and Harrell said about 20 students were on board at the time.
Harrell said the driver had to be taken to the hospital because "she was beside herself."
