Former University of Kentucky professor, Lexington resident and celebrated poet Nikky Finney wrote a poem to mark Friday's removal of the Confederate flag from South Carolina's State House grounds.
Nikky Finney, winner of the 2011 National Book Award for poetry was one of Lexington's most beloved literary figures during her time in Kentucky. In 2013, she said she was returning home to South Carolina to spend more time with her aging parents.
Finney came to Lexington about 1990 as a one-year visiting professor at UK. She wrote her second book, Rice, in a cubbyhole desk at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning downtown. In 2012, she was named UK's Guy Davenport Endowed Chair in English.
