Two Leestown Middle School students attempted to bring two pellet guns to the Lexington school Wednesday morning, school officials announced Wednesday afternoon.
One was stopped before entering the school, said Principal Cynthia Lawson.
Someone had called the school to say that a student had been seen with a gun while waiting at a bus stop, she said.
"We knew the bus and we recognized the description of the child," Lawson said. "So we were able to get on the bus when it got here."
Never miss a local story.
The other child was identified as a result of the investigation into the first gun. The second child already had entered the school, she said.
One child had pellets for the guns, but neither gun was loaded, Lawson said.
"I don't think they had any intent to use them," she said.
Emails and voice messages describing the incident were delivered to parents Wednesday afternoon, Lawson said.
Teachers and administrators at the school will also discuss the incident with students.
"We're just going to remind them that this is a family," Lawson said. "We all need to work together to keep everything safe, so if you see something you have to talk about it."
Lawson didn't say what disciplinary action had been taken against the students, but said school district procedures were followed.
