Police charged a Harlan County woman with murder Tuesday after finding her 2-month-old son dead in her apartment, according to Kentucky State Police.
The preliminary investigation indicates Sierra Foster, 23, was under the influence of drugs and had not cared for the child for at least 12 hours, according to a news release.
The cause of the child’s death won’t be known until an autopsy scheduled for Wednesday is performed, however.
There was no obvious signs of trauma to the boy, said Trooper Shane Jacobs, a state police spokesman.
The case unfolded after someone made a report to social workers that Foster was impaired and couldn’t care for her son, whose name police did not release.
Sheriff’s deputies went with social workers to check on the child’s welfare and found the baby dead in the apartment at Eastbook Station Road. Deputies contacted state police for assistance.
In addition to murder, police charged Foster with first-degree criminal abuse, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
