The Russell County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the Monday afternoon fatal shooting of a man in the Jabez community near where Russell, Pulaski and Wayne counties meet.
James Frederick Barger, 30, of Nancy, formerly of Hazard in Perry County, was identified as the deceased, the Russell County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
The shooting occurred just after 1:30 p.m. Monday at 241 Lafavers Cemetery Road in Jabez.
The Russell County Dispatch Center received a 911 call from Travis Edwards, 36, reporting that his residence had just been broken into, the sheriff’s office said. Edwards told the dispatcher that he had fired shots after the intruder allegedly pointed a gun at Edwards moments after fleeing the residence through the rear door.
Sheriff Clete McAninch and several deputies responded to the residence. The body of the alleged intruder was found about 275 feet from the residence. A firearm was found near Barger’s body.
As part of the investigation, a search warrant for the property was obtained by Deputy Ethan Pike. A search led to the discovery of an indoor marijuana growing operation and several pounds of processed marijuana, the sheriff’s office said.
Edwards and his girlfriend, Whitney Raye Nevels, 27, who also lives at 241 Lafavers Cemetery Road, were both arrested and charged with cultivating marijuana and trafficking in marijuana, the sheriff’s office said.
Edwards and Nevels were lodged in the Russell County Detention Center in Russell Springs.
Deputy Coroner Emily Sanders transported Barger’s body to the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort where an autopsy was scheduled to be performed Tuesday.
No charges have been filed in connection with the shooting but the investigation is ongoing.
