A pilot was injured but managed to escape the burning wreckage of his plane after it went down at a private airport in Spencer County Sunday.
Stan Thompson, 60, of Taylorsville, was taking off at an airport in Little Mount just before 7 p.m. Sunday when the single-engine Piper Arrow experienced engine problems, according to a news release from state police.
The plane went off the edge of the runway into a wooded area, where it hit trees, flipped and caught fire, state police said.
Thompson was able to escape, but he sustained “moderate injuries and burns,” police said. He was taken to University Hospital in Louisville.
