A Laurel County woman who was killed in a house fire Wednesday appears to have died from smoke inhalation.
Deborah Benfield, 56, was pronounced dead a little before 9 a.m. Wednesday at her home at 564 Byrley Road in Corbin, Laurel Deputy Coroner Kris Vanover said. The fire started at about 8 a.m. It appeared that Benfield had been sitting in a recliner in the living room and attempted to crawl out of the home at the time of the fire, Vanover said.
Another woman in the house escaped, Vanover said.
Benfield had a pulmonary condition that required her to be on oxygen, Vanover said. It's not clear whether the oxygen was the cause of the fire, which is still under investigation, Vanover said.
