Rescue workers recovered the body of an 18-year-old kayaker Friday who went missing in Lake Cumberland two days earlier, officials said.
Tyler Pickerell, 18, was paddling across the lake with a friend Wednesday when their kayak started taking on water and turned over, Pulaski County Sheriff Todd Wood has said.
The two talked briefly in the water, then swam for opposite shores, he said. Pickerell never made it to safety.
After searching for two days, volunteer divers from the Pulaski County Rescue Squad and the Boone County Water Rescue Team were able to recover Pickerell's body around 7 p.m. Friday.
Never miss a local story.
Using advanced sonar equipment, the team located the body 106 feet below the water's surface Friday morning, but high winds, waves and the depth and temperature of the water delayed divers from reaching it, said Tiger Robinson, public safety director for Pulaski County.
Pickerell's body was identified by his father, Robinson said.
Pickerell was a senior at to Southwestern High School in Somerset, where he played football.
Rescue teams were still packing up equipment around 10 p.m.
