Nicholas County Sheriff Dick Garrett pleaded not guilty Monday to one count of theft by deception and one count of abuse of public trust.
A grand jury issued an indictment against Garrett last month. The charges stem from Garrett's handling of money from a drug asset forfeiture fund, said Commonwealth's Attorney Kathryn Hendrickson of Maysville, the special prosecutor assigned to the case.
She said Bill Mains, the judge assigned to the case, scheduled Garrett's trial for April.
Garrett, who has been sheriff since 2003, has said he does not intend to step down.
