MAYSVILLE — Two young children were killed and two adults were injured in a house fire in downtown Maysville on Wednesday.
Authorities had not released the names of the victims Wednesday night, and the cause of the blaze was undetermined.
The children were living with a man and woman who were their legal guardians but not their parents, Maysville Fire Department Capt. Dan Lester said. Both caregivers were taken to Meadowview Regional Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation and possibly minor burns, authorities said.
The fire was reported at 1:39 p.m., Lester said. When firefighters arrived, fire had engulfed both stories of the home, which is near the railroad tracks in the 1400 block of East Main Street, near the edge of town.
Lester said he was not sure of the gutted home's exact address, but the neighboring house was at 1411 East Main Street.
Mayor David Cartmell called the scene "gruesome," and said firefighters were shaken up.
"This is an awful thing," he said.
State and local police and fire investigators were trying to determine what sparked the fire. Lester said he didn't suspect foul play, but he said it was too early to speculate on a cause.
