An interim mayor for Elkhorn City was sworn in this week as the Pike County clerk and a candidate for the office appealed a judge's decision to throw out November's election.
Two-term City Councilman Johnny Mack Potter was sworn in Wednesday after being appointed by the Elkhorn City council. The council previously voted against appointing the election winner, Mike Taylor, to the office he vacated in January after a circuit court ruling in a lawsuit filed by the losing candidates.
Circuit Judge Steven D. Combs found that because several non-residents were given ballots that included the mayor's race, and because some voting machines were set to Central time instead of Eastern, the election should be thrown out.
Taylor and the Pike County Board of Elections have appealed that ruling.
Potter will serve until a new election is held. The city council is to appoint a new member to fill his council seat.
