An overnight fire at a livestock yard in Monticello is being considered suspicious, officials said.
The Monticello Fire Department responded to the Wayne County Livestock Auction Company at 12:32 a.m. Wednesday to what Chief Jerry Ferrell described as a "large fire" to a building used primarily for buying, selling and trading livestock.
Ferrell said no injuries were reported to livestock or people.
He said there were no animals present because they're typically brought in on Wednesdays and sold on Thursdays, so the fire happened before the animals had arrived.
Never miss a local story.
Ferrell said the origin of the fire is unknown. He said the fire started in the "left rear" of the building. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
