Funeral services have been set for Sgt. Jeremy R. Summers, 27, of Bracken County, who died July 14 of injuries he sustained the day before in Afghanistan's Paktika province.
Sgt. Summers was killed "after enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire," according to a news release from the Defense Department.
He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team with the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell.
His mother, Laura Summers, said he had served six years in the Army, including a tour of duty in Iraq, and had just re-enlisted a week before his death. He also was stationed in Korea for a while, she said.
Sgt. Summers was a 2002 graduate of Bracken County High School.
In addition to his parents, Mike and Laura Summers, he is survived by a sister, Jessica Summers; a brother, Austin Hunter Summers; and grandmothers, Joyce Wagoner of Bracken County and Mary Fowler of Harrison County.
