Dakota Meyer, a Marine from Green County, will receive the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama Sept. 15, only the third living recipient and the first Marine to get the medal for service in Iraq or Afghanistan.
A USA Today story offers an in-depth look at Meyer, his Kentucky roots and the bravery that won him the honor. The newspaper noted Meyer saved the lives of 13 U.S. troops and 23 Afghan soldiers on Sept. 8, 2009, the actions for which he is being recognized. He also retrieved the bodies of Michael Johnson, 25; Marine Gunnery Sgt. Edwin Johnson, 31; Marine Staff Sgt. Aaron Kenefick, 30; Navy Corpsman James Layton, 22; and an Afghan soldier they were training. Meyer suffered shrapnel wounds in the process.
