The Nature Conservancy of Kentucky sold Griffith Woods to Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources on Monday.
Griffith Woods is located in Harrison County, five miles south of Cynthiana. The sale adds 352 acres of land to the Bluegrass Region for public use, helping to protect upland habitat. Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife will use the property for public recreation and wildlife management, including hunting, wildlife viewing, education and hiking, according to a release from the Nature Conservancy of Kentucky.
The two groups have been working together for preservation of the woods for many years. Other conservation agencies will consult on preservation and maintenance.
Griffith Woods has preserved the bluegrass savanna-woodlands that once covered the region. Some trees in the woods are 300 years old.
