A coal miner was killed Monday in an accident in an underground mine in Pike County, according to the state Office of Mine Safety and Licensing.
A preliminary investigation shows Farley Sargent, 33, was laying rail track in the mine when a section of the wall collapsed into the mine corridor, fatally injuring him, according to a news release.
The accident happened at 11:40 a.m. at the McCoy Elkhorn Coal Corp. Mine No. 23.
The death is the second mining fatality in Kentucky this year, according to the release.
Under federal guidelines, which are different from the state's, it would be the fourth mining-related fatality in the state this year, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.
