A man was flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital after a shootout with a Stanford police officer in a Wal-Mart parking lot, state police said in a news release.
The confrontation started when the man, who was suspected of shoplifting, was stopped by a Wal-Mart loss-prevention employee about 2:47 p.m. Monday. The man showed a handgun and fled the store when the employee called police, state police said.
Stanford police officer Tim Morris, who responded to the call, saw the suspect in the parking lot. Before Morris could get out of his vehicle, the suspect allegedly fired at the officer.
Morris got out of the vehicle and returned fire, hitting the suspect, the news release said. The suspect was not named, and the extent of his injuries was not clear.
