A single-engine amphibious airplane crash landed into Laurel Lake near London Thursday evening, according to Federal Aviation Administration officials.
The aircraft is registered to Thomas Deppmeyer of Oneida County, NY, according to the registration number on the FAA's online registry.
The pilot, LeRoy Moore Jr., was the only person in the plane, which was towed to land at the boat ramp. The pilot was uninjured by the crash.
The National Transpiration Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash and will release a preliminary report in about 10 days.
It is illegal to land aircraft into Laurel Lake or any body of water operated by the U.S. Forest Service.
According to London district ranger Jason Nedlo, the results of the FAA investigation will determine whether or not the pilot is brought up on charges.
The pilot claims it was a necessary emergency landing. If the investigation finds otherwise, he could face punishment, which will more than likely be the equivalent of a citation.
