It's hard to believe the Urban County Government has failed to keep up not just with Lexington's major employers but also other Kentucky cities by expanding employee benefits to include domestic partners.
The council got the ball rolling in the right direction at Tuesday's work session by unanimously approving a motion to begin considering a policy change.
Louisville, Covington and Berea provide partner benefits, as do the University of Kentucky, Toyota, LexMark, the Herald-Leader and many other local businesses.
The local government would strengthen its ability to compete for and retain employees by updating its policy.
Ten years ago the council overturned then-Mayor Teresa Isaac's unilateral decision to institute partner benefits, but that contentious episode had far more to do with Isaac's exclusion of the council from the process than with the merits of the issue.
This time, the council and Mayor Jim Gray are approaching the issue the right way. They should hasten to do the right thing.
