Governor: Hal Heiner
The nominee must move to the middle to appeal to a broader range of voters and repair bitter rifts in the party. Heiner, a businessman with experience in local government, is the best choice for those tasks and the most qualified Republican candidate to become an effective governor.
Attorney General: Whitney H. Westerfield
As a state senator, Westerfield played a central role in some difficult reforms: rewriting the juvenile justice code, an enlightened approach to the heroin epidemic, and opening the civil protective order system to victims of stalking and dating violence.
Governor: Jack Conway
Now in the last of eight years as Kentucky's attorney general, Conway also served in senior positions under then-Gov. Paul Patton. This has given him a deep, up-close knowledge of what's involved in running state government.
