We Lexington taxpayers are so pierced by the plight of our panhandlers that our mayor and council crafted a taxpayer-funded solution.
We pick the panhandlers up in a properly decorated van and take them somewhere and pay them $9 an hour to do something. Makes us feel righteous to not see those folks standing on the corners.
WLEX-TV recently devoted an entire day of investigative time watching a group of panhandlers who worked in shifts. The reporters didn’t inquire if the panhandlers had only one sign.
These fellows gathered up some donations and were off to buy several bottles of cheap vodka and some cigarettes. They then went to a quiet place and enjoyed the fruits of their day’s panhandling.
Let’s examine the two scenarios. In one, the panhandlers stand on a hot street corner for several hours to accumulate a bit of money from willing donors. Then they enjoy the fruits of their efforts with cheap vodka and smokes. In the other, they are picked up in an air-conditioned van and paid $9 an hour from our tax money and sent on their way.
These fellows are able to afford a much better quality of vodka, some part of which I have involuntarily funded.
