The condensed op-ed “Why it costs so much to be poor in America” by Karen Weese stated, “... more than 40 percent of Americans say they cover an unexpected $400 expense without real hardship.”
As this seemed at odds with the title, I looked up the full column on the Washington Post’s website where it read “More than 40 percent of Americans say they struggle even to make ends meet each month and would be unable to cover an unexpected $400 expense without real hardship.”
Obviously this is opposite what you printed. I have long wondered why the Herald-Leader feels the need to edit national columnists’ pieces, as it does a real disservice to readers. When the Herald-Leader tells us to see full columns on the website, it makes one wonder why we’re paying for the paper.
