Ferguson owed an apology for cartoon
Concerning, Joel Pett's cartoon of Aug. 26 attacking Amanda Ferguson: In consideration of the troubling findings released last week by Kentucky Auditor Adam Edelen and the fact that Ferguson was one of only two Fayette County school board members to demand fiscal transparency and accountability from Superintendent Tom Shelton in the recent budget crisis, when can Ferguson expect an apology from the Herald-Leader?
Apparently we need more school board members disrupting a "culture within certain elements of management that does not reflect the district's purported values." (Quoting Edelen's findings.)
Ferguson and Doug Barnett, both up for re-election on Nov. 4, were the only board members who sought to hold the superintendent accountable for budget discrepancies. They both deserve to be returned to office.
Tricked into war?
Far too many people want to take knee-jerk military actions against ISIS for the beheadings of two journalists. I have reservations about this for two main reasons:
¦ The reporters voluntarily put themselves in harm's way by agreeing to cover stories in an area that is well known for vitriolic anti-American sentiment; lethal consequences for their involvement was an undeniable risk on their part.
¦ It makes no sense for a group like ISIS to openly provoke America into using our significantly larger and stronger military to attack them. Both beheading videos show what appears to be the same man in a black outfit claiming to be from ISIS doing the beheading. Anybody can wear a black outfit and claim that he is an ISIS combatant. It makes much more sense for one of Iraqi President Fuad Masum's soldiers pretending to be an ISIS insurgent to have done it in order to draw the U.S. back into the fray against ISIS.
I also would not put it past a military supplier to "arrange" the beheadings in order to provoke the U.S. into further military actions so that they can keep raking in their gargantuan profits.
Grimes for future
Sen. Mitch McConnell has stated he will be talking about the future and not the past after the resignation of his campaign manager, Jesse Benton. McConnell's past is exactly what the voter needs to be concerned about. We will get more of the same if he is elected to another term. If Kentuckians want a better future, Alison Lundergan Grimes is the candidate to elect.
With McConnell we get gridlock on any bill originating from the Democrats, women treated as second-class citizens, government shut down, a poor attendance record and absolutely nothing to help Kentucky's infrastructure, agriculture or Kentuckians who aren't millionaires. The only two categories that have improved the last 30 years are education and health care, both being improved by Democrats while McConnell said "no."
McConnell has had 30 years to make it better and hasn't. Vote for Grimes for the future Kentucky deserves.
Resist Koch money
Judas sold out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. The Koch brothers are trying to buy Kentucky votes with the almighty dollar to re-elect do-nothing Sen. Mitch McConnell.
The bribe paid to put Christ to death on a cross was the cruelest bribe in history. A bribe of any kind is a bribe and is wrong. Shame on us if we let the Koch brothers throw their huge bankrolls around Kentucky to warp our minds with hate-filled attack ads to re-elect McConnell and insult and condemn Alison Lundergan Grimes. I pray we won't sell out the children, women, and men of Kentucky for the Koch brother's big bucks.
Kentucky deserves a senator with a worthy purpose to improve the quality of life for our people. We must elect Grimes as the first woman Senator in Kentucky's history to help lead us to a better day.
