I often hear conservatives express their disrespect for President Barack Obama without giving specifics for their contempt. For example an April 11 letter negatively compared Obama to President Ronald Reagan to provide justification for Senate Republicans’ refusal to consider Obama’s Supreme Court nominee. Let’s look at some facts to add perspective to the comparison:
According to the Gallup polls, Obama’s current approval rating is 51 percent, far better than “little to no trust or respect.” In April 1988, Reagan’s final year in office, his approval rating was 50 percent. Less than “absolute confidence.”
Let’s talk about the national debt. According to U.S. Treasury data, the debt increased by 190 percent during Reagan’s tenure. Although Obama’s record is not final, it does not approach this breathtaking performance.
Obama has the duty to nominate a Supreme Court justice. The senators should do their job.
