In the 2016 election, the Democratic Party not only cheated Bernie Sanders out of the nomination, it also cheated the American people, and the world, of a Sanders’ presidency.
After Hillary Clinton’s defeat I was hoping the party would come clean and apologize to its constituents for its mistakes. But instead it is doubling down in manipulation, successfully steering xenophobia and pseudo-patriotic sentiments by blaming Russia for the electoral loss.
Clinton lost the Electoral College by a huge margin while Democrats lost everything else. They lost Senate and House races. They lost most governorships, most legislatures, and many of the smaller races throughout the country.
Russia would have to have hacked into hundreds, perhaps thousands, of smaller electoral system, all over the country, organized by different entities, using different procedures. It is simply impossible.
The more likely scenario is that Clinton lost because she failed to rally the progressives of the nation’s Rust Belt, as Barack Obama himself acknowledged. Although Obama has also blamed Russia, shortly after the election he said that he could have beaten Donald Trump because he would have rallied the progressive of those states. This acknowledges that the reason Clinton lost is because she failed to do so.
The issue to keep in mind is that Russia is not the enemy of the American people.
The enemy of the American people is the military-industrial complex that sends our young men and women to endless unnecessary wars and neglects them when they return from war. Soldiers are made to believe they are defending their country when in actuality they are serving the interest of the billionaires. These wars are so expensive they do not leave funding for education, social services, science or infrastructure.
The enemy of the American people is the oil lobby that pushes for those wars and whose deceitful ways and greed are destroying the planet.
The enemy of the American people is the insurance companies that commoditize health care, making it into a luxury and not the human right it is supposed to be. Lack of health care is responsible for far more deaths every year than terrorism. It is also responsible for thousands of bankruptcies every year.
The enemies of the American people are the crooks of both branches of Congress who allow loopholes in laws that give our tax dollars as subsidies to giant oil companies and agrochemical industries that pollute land and water.
The real enemies are those politicians who over the years have made free-trade deals allowing companies to leave the country leaving millions of people without jobs. Not only did we lose the jobs, we also lost the taxes the companies used to pay.
The real enemies are on Wall Street gambling away the future of the country for their personal gain. All the time we spend worrying about Russia and not paying attention to their trickery is time they take to push further their agenda.
President Donald Trump has been accused by Democrats of being too cozy with Russian president Vladimir Putin. In actuality, the smartest thing the U.S. president can do is to get along with all the other superpowers. The last thing that we need is another war. We need to create a stable world where Russia, China and other emergent powers may have their share of the world’s resources.
It is too early to tell what Trump will do in international politics. I was happy to see him cancel the Trans-Pacific trade agreement; I was not as impressed when he bombed Syria. Only time will tell.
